Popular Uses for a Sewn Devon Flag

A sewn Devon flag is designed for permanent outdoor display where quality, durability and appearance matter. Manufactured from heavy-duty woven polyester with individually sewn panels, it is ideal for flying from residential, commercial and public flagpoles throughout the year. The Devon flag is regularly displayed outside homes, farms, hotels, visitor attractions, schools, village halls, golf clubs, marinas and local businesses to celebrate the county's heritage and identity. It is also widely flown during agricultural shows, county fairs, sailing events, food festivals and community celebrations across Devon. For organisations wanting a long-lasting, professional-quality county flag, a sewn Devon flag offers significantly greater longevity and colour retention than lightweight printed alternatives.

How to Fly the Devon Flag Correctly

Flying the Devon flag correctly helps it make the strongest visual impact while protecting your investment. When displayed from a vertical flagpole, the white cross outlined in black should appear upright with the flag attached securely to the pole using the appropriate finishing, whether rope and toggle, Inglefield clips or eyelets. If flown alongside the Union Flag and other county or national flags, follow standard UK flag protocol, ensuring each flag is flown respectfully and at an appropriate height. To maximise the lifespan of your sewn Devon flag, inspect fixings regularly, avoid prolonged flying during severe storms or exceptionally high winds, and lower the flag if extreme weather is forecast. Proper care will significantly extend the life of a premium woven polyester flag.

Choosing the Right Size Devon Flag

Selecting the correct flag size is essential for achieving a professional appearance and ensuring the flag flies efficiently. A flag that is too small can appear lost on a tall pole, while one that is too large places unnecessary strain on both the fabric and the flagpole. As a general guide, choose a flag with approximately one yard of fly for every ten feet of flagpole height. Use our Flag Flying Guide below to quickly identify the recommended Devon flag size for your existing flagpole. Matching the correct flag size not only creates the best visual effect but also helps maximise the working life of your sewn Devon flag.

History of the Devon Flag

Unlike many traditional county flags that evolved over centuries, the Devon flag is a relatively modern design that quickly became an enduring symbol of the county. Known as St Petroc's Flag, it was chosen by the public in 2003 following a county-wide competition organised by BBC Devon. The winning design was created by Ryan Sealey and later adopted by Devon County Council, helping establish a recognisable flag that represents the whole county.

The flag combines a white cross bordered in black on a rich green field. These colours were selected to reflect the landscapes that make Devon distinctive - the green farmland and rolling countryside, the white coastline and surf, and the dark granite of Dartmoor. The design is also associated with Saint Petroc, one of Devon's best-known early Christian figures, whose legacy remains visible throughout the county.

Today, the Devon flag is flown throughout the county on public buildings, businesses, homes, marinas and village halls. Its growing popularity has made it one of England's most widely recognised county flags, and a premium sewn version provides a durable, long-lasting way to display Devon pride on external flagpoles throughout the year.

How should I look after my flag?

To clean your woven polyester sewn flag, gently hand wash it in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, or machine wash on a gentle cycle at a maximum temperature of 30°C. Avoid using bleach, fabric conditioners or harsh chemicals, as these may damage the fabric and stitching. Rinse thoroughly and allow the flag to air dry naturally before re-hoisting or storing. Do not tumble dry, and if ironing is required, use a cool iron on the reverse side. Always ensure the flag is completely dry before storage and, for maximum lifespan, lower the flag during severe weather and inspect it regularly for signs of wear.

How Long Will A Sewn Devon Flag Last?

The lifespan of a sewn Devon flag depends largely on its location and exposure to the weather. In sheltered inland locations, a high-quality woven polyester sewn flag can provide many months or even years of service, whereas flags flown in coastal areas or exposed high-wind sites will experience greater wear due to increased wind loading, salt air and harsher weather conditions.

For locations subject to frequent strong winds, we recommend selecting our optional antifray netting, which helps reduce stress on the fly edge and can extend the working life of the flag. To maximise longevity, flags should be lowered during severe weather conditions and inspected regularly for signs of wear. As with all outdoor textiles, no flag will last indefinitely, but choosing a premium sewn Devon and following good flag care practices will help achieve the longest possible service life.
