Step-by-step instructions
1. Prepare the halyard
- Lower the halyard rope to ground level
- Ensure it runs freely through the pulley (truck) at the top of the pole
2. Attach the top toggle
- Locate the upper loop in the halyard rope ( for new poles tie a loop on the top of the flagpole Halyard )
- Pass the wooden toggle at the top of the flag through this loop
- Slide it down slightly so it locks securely in place
This is your primary load point - make sure it is properly seated.
3. Attach the bottom tail
- Take the bottom tail line of the flag
- Secure it to the lower section of the halyard by tying directly onto the flagpole halyard
- The flag should be held under light tension between the top and bottom fixings
4. Hoist the flag
- Pull the halyard steadily to raise the flag
- Keep tension on the rope to prevent twisting or tangling
- Check the flag is flying the correct way as it rises
5. Secure the halyard to the cleat
- Once the flag reaches the top, wrap the rope around the cleat
- Use a figure-eight pattern to lock it off securely
- Finish with a firm tuck to prevent slippage
Key tips (worth getting right)
- Maintain constant tension - prevents movement, noise, and wear
- Avoid twists - a twisted halyard will wrap the flag around the pole
- Check alignment - flag should hang straight before fully raising
- Prevent fraying - seal rope ends (light melt for synthetic rope)
- Secure properly - a loose cleat wrap will slip in wind
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not forming a proper loop for the toggle (can slip under load)
- Bottom attachment too loose (flag will flap excessively)
- Poor cleat tying (rope slips and flag drops)
